"Bio Degradable" is so misleading

One of the most frustrating aspects of the Eco/Green business is the use of the word "biodegradable" as a synonym for "safe for the environment". One of the most obvious miscreants is a company out of West Vancouver (how ironic, as West Vancouver is situated in one of the most geographically beautiful environments in the world) that boldly advertise that their products are "biodegradable". The two primary components in their moss and algae cleaner are TSP and Bleach! As a friend once said.."a dead rat in my well is biodegradable, but that doesn't mean I am going to drink the water". Hopefully the consumer will become knowledgeable enough to realize that everything is biodegradable given a long enough time frame, and that the use of that term is absolutely misleading and useless when judging the effects of a product on the surrounding environment.

Oxygen Bleach
- Oxygen bleach works by releasing oxygen when added to water to clean and bleach out stains. It is non-toxic and color-safe. Some popular brands of oxygen bleach are OxiClean and Oxi-Boost. You can buy these products at many home improvement stores, supermarkets or on the Internet.
  
  To clean your roof, mix a solution of oxygen bleach and water into a pump-style garden sprayer. The ratio of bleach to water will vary depending on the concentration of oxygen bleach you are using. You will generally need four to six ounces of oxygen bleach per gallon of water.
  
  Use a ladder to reach the roof and spray the cleaning solution on dark-stained areas of the roof first. Then, apply a coat of the oxygen bleach mixture to the entire roof surface. Go back to the stained area and apply a second coating of the oxygen bleach. Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the roof for about 20 minutes.
  
  Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to rinse the cleaner from the roof. Set the water pressure on the nozzle to the strongest setting and hold the hose about three feet from the roof to effectively remove the stains. Work from the top of the roof, spraying downstream when rinsing to avoid re-staining the cleaned parts of the roof.
Other Commercial Products
- A variety of other eco-friendly commercial roof cleaners are also available, including Wash-Safe Roof Wash and Roof-A-Cide. Check the label of the product to be sure the ingredients contain no toxic or hazardous chemicals. Most eco-friendly roof cleaners will display information on their packaging regarding product safety for the environment.

Endorsement from fundraising group

Just had this note from a North Van soccer mom for their team's fundraising efforts...

I was wondering if you could pass this information on to Doug. Sam’s overseas team is doing a pub night on Feb. 16 and Katie Thomas and I are organizing the silent auction. I was wondering if Doug would be interested in donating some of his product to our event (I was thinking that the sports wash would be a great item but any of the products he has would be great to put together in a basket). The sports wash by the way is fantastic (I’ve used it a number of times on Sam’s stuff and they don’t seem to get smelly as fast as regular washing – so it’s been great!). I’ve attached a letter that we are distributing to businesses, just so you have it. Have Doug let me know either way and thanks for considering donating.

Flood damage mold removal

With all the tragedy in the East, I thought this might be a useful article in basement mold treatment. Obviously we are suggesting using our Flood RX product, as it is hydrogen peroxide based !

Removing mold on basement walls using hydrogen peroxide

You can use hydrogen peroxide to remove mold on basement walls. Peroxide kills mold, so it is good for this purpose. If there is mold on the basement walls, you may want to consider whether the basement is damp. If the air is continually damp, it’s likely the mold will come back!

HOW TO USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE: Use 1% to 3% hydrogen peroxide. If the mold looks dry at all, it is important not to touch it or disturb it. First spray the mold with hydrogen peroxide. This reduces the likelihood of mold powder flying in the air. One way to clean the walls is to just spray hydrogen peroxide on, then use a sponge to wipe the walls off. Work from the bottom up so that any drips will always be running into areas that are already wet. To kill the mold more effectively, spray and then leave the peroxide in place for a minute before wiping it off. Another way to clean the walls is to mix hydrogen peroxide with HOT water, then use a sponge to clean with this solution. Work from the bottom up.

Sealing New Wood

When is Wood Ready for Sealing?When is the right time to seal wood? Some say that wood should be sealed after a year
so that the wood is completely dry. However, a year is too long a time to wait to seal wood.
During this time, the wood would have incurred too much damage, most of which cannot
be reversed. Wood can be completely dry and ready for sealing in two or three months. It
has been found that wood that has been sealed within three months is much more
durable and look better than wood that has been sealed after one year.

You can easily tell if the wood is ready for sealing. Professionals use an electric moisture
meter to determine if the wood can be sealed. However, a simpler method is to sprinkle
drops of water on the surface of the wood. If the water is quickly absorbed, it means that
the wood is dry enough that it is ready for sealing.

"Cottage Magazine" tests 4 roof cleaning products

Had an interesting conversation with Cottage Life magazine about different roof de mossing products. They are testing 3 toxic chemical moss and algae removal products against our Eco Safe Roof Wash. Will look forward to their results for all cottage (or cabin as west coasters like to call their own piece of paradise) owners. To me the results are predictible.

HOW TO CLEAN HOCKEY EQUIPMENT

Here's some good "Poop" about "PUTTING THE STINK IN THE PENALTY BOX" using our new wonder product All Star Sports Wash

Cleaning the small sports gear and equipment:

Jerseys, pants, pads and gloves can usually be thrown right into a washing machine with 2 - 4 scoops of All Star Sports Wash. If you could agitate the All Star Sports Wash for a few minutes to dissolve it before putting the equipment in all the better. Let it soak as long as you can...2 hours would be great. This will typically remove all the bacteria and odor without harming the equipment as you would if using bleach. If using a front loading machine, of course the pre soak agitation is impossible but still works. The hydrogen peroxide in the All Star Sports Wash will work to clean and disinfect while deodorizing the gear. After washing, let air dry and repeat as necessary to keep the gear looking clean and fresh. By the way this method using All Star Sports Wash works for all sports like baseball uniforms and sneakers cleaning, Lacrosse equipment cleaning, Rugby strip cleaning, basketball, soccer uniforms cleaning, cleaning heavily soiled mountain bike gear, running gear cleaning, and all soiled sporting goods gear.

Cleaning hockey Helmets

Hockey helmets require a bit more care as they cannot be placed in a washing machine. In a spray bottle mix a solution of All Star Sports Wash and spray directly into the helmet. Wipe with a damp clothe and you will have a clean, disinfected helmet with a streak free shine. In extreme cases this may need to be repeated until the odour is gone.

Cleaning large bulkier sports gear

Fill a bathtub about half full with warm water. Add half a cup of All Star Sports Wash to the water while its running and agitate to dissolve. (All Star Sports Wash is different from regular detergent - it is sodium per carbonate, a hydrogen peroxide compound that is used to remove stains from clothing and to attack harmful bacteria. It works like a bleach but will not stain or discolor your clothing and will not weaken the seams and fabric like household bleach does) It also has a powerful detergent to help lift the soiling and cleanse the hockey gear, and make it smell fresh.

WE'RE BAAAACK

Wow after being hacked and losing most of my past blogs I am now back to pour more facinating
info about eco safe cleaning...yeeee haaaaaw!!

Most of our products are based on the many uses of Hydrogen Peroxide for elimination of moss, algae and mildew, and cleaning in general, so here's a story that has no practical application at all but is a great story heard on the radio here in North Vancouver, BC. (do not practice this at home!!).

The DJ was telling about a phone call he received from an avid golf fan. Apparantly this fanatic golfer had scored two tickets to the practice round for the Master's in Augusta Georgia..the mecca of golf to say the least. He was over the moon with excitement as he and his buddy were going to Augusta to get "up close and personal" with the best of the best!

Two nights before leaving he came home from work to tragedy...his dog "Sierra" had eaten both tickets!!! After freaking out he ran to the bathroom and grabbed a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide he kept for disinfecting wounds, splashed a healthy dose into a cup with water and poured it down poor Sierra's throat. The dog immediately vomited up the torn reminents of the tickets along with whatever she had been eating that day. He sorted through the stinky mess, and pulled out all the bits and pieces of the tickets, cleaned them off as best he could, assembled them like a jig saw puzzle, took a picture and sent it to Augusta with an explanation of what happened. Augusta actually sent him replacement tickets based on his story and what was left of the originals and off they went to the big show!!! What a great story!!

(by the way Sierra showed no ill effects of the Hydrogen Peroxide experience).

Just another use for my favorite cleaner!!!

Wash Safe's "Cedar Seal" and "Deck Seal" products, what does "water based" or "water borne"mean?

Water based means we use water to carry the protective ingredients in the sealers. This means that anywhere water can penetrate into the wood, so does our sealer. Using water also means we are not using harmful chemicals. Our Cedar Seal and Deck Seal are completely safe for the environment. Also, Cedar Seal and Deck Seal are much more concentrated than others on the market, therefore you will get a much longer lasting finish for your money. Basically our water based sealers are easier to use, they are safer to use and keep your wooden decks and cedar roofs and fences looking cleaner and newer for years.

Yet another question about roof cleaning...bleach???

Algae, moss and fungus are among the oldest (not oldest profession) and most primitive life forms on earth. Ridding your home of them is difficult because they can exist on material considered far too difficult for most other living things. Chlorine and bleach based cleaners are poor choices at best for treating mosses, algae and mildew fungus. Chlorine, while excellent for non porous surfaces like counter tops, toilets, shower glass etc has liitle if any ability to actually penetrate the subsurface of porous surfaces. Thus it does not effectively penetrate the cell walls of these organisms, so its cleaning effect is on moss and algae is superficial, making its effectiveness only temporary. Re growth of the moss or algae is only weeks or months away. Roof cleaning products containing Sodium Hydroxide (bleach) or Trisodium Phosphate (TSP), although quite effective in cleaning roofs, are the principal ingredient in most toxic cleaners like oven, or drain cleaners ( and I am sure you have breathed them...yech). These chemicals are very corrosive and may damage gutters, siding, flashing, and painted surfaces, to name a few. Also most shrubbery, plants and other types of decorative vegetation will not tolerate even the smallest dose of these toxic brews. The use of Sodium Hydroxide should be left to the professionals who have the proper training, equipment and expertise to minimize health risks and property and environmental damage (see the blog on the fish kill). Wash Safe products are an infinitely safer and more effective method for cleaning moss, algae and mildew. Our oxygen based product has the ability to penetrate the cell walls of these organisms, prohibit the absorption of the necessary water borne nutrients thus distroying the plant in a matter of hours. Best of all our products are safe for plants, pets and people. If you have a choice, and give a damn, the choice should be easy... it's all up to us

Why have my roof cleaned if selling my house?

The first thing a person sees of your home is the roof....the "curb appeal" in realtor's language. A dirty or contaminated roof diminishes the value of your home. Nearly 50% of the initial impression a buyer makes is determined by the appearance of your roof. Even a well cared for property with a well manucured landscaping, can't overcome this initial negative impression.
